PE & Sport
Purpose of PE and Sport Premium:
PE at Raeburn allows our children to…
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
- Engage in competitive sports and activities.
- Be physically active for sustained periods of time.
- Develop personally and socially, promoting our citizenship values of resilience, responsibility, positivity, curiosity, kindness and respect.
- Acquire the skills and knowledge to be active and healthy for life.
Why is PE important?
Here at Raeburn, we value the importance of Physical Education and place it at the heart of our curriculum. PE and exercise are crucial for improving a child’s physical health, as well as helping to improve their mental and cognitive well-being. The children learn to understand sportsmanship, fairness and respect through sports and engage in brand new experiences. Alongside this, the skills that they learn in PE lessons are transferrable to the classroom as it can build their confidence, teamwork, concentration, and social skills.
Who teaches PE?
PE is taught weekly by teaching staff and specialist coaches. Class teachers work closely with Mr Colligan to teach a range of skills across lots of different sports and activities. In addition, we have a ‘Shadow Dance’ coach to teach dance to the children for a half term and a ‘Yoga Bears’ instructor who teaches classes yoga.
PE and Sport Premium:
Schools receive PE and sport premium funding from the Government based on the number of pupils they have in years 1 to 6. Schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing the participation in PE and sport, so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.
This year we received £19,610.

HMHB Team:
We believe passionately in the link between physical and mental health. We have a team of ‘Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies’ pupil ambassadors who promote the positive values of physical and emotional wellbeing across the school.

Our HMHB aims are:
- Be the youth voice for emotional and physical wellbeing in our school and community
- Promote the positive values of sport and emotional wellbeing
- Be a role model and champion for PE and school sport and mindfulness
- Increase participation opportunities and healthy lifestyles for everyone
Extra-curricular activities:
We aim to inspire pupil’s curiosity to know more about different sports and encourage children to try new things by offering a variety of extra-curricular activities, which appeal to a range of abilities and interests. There is opportunity for competition on every level. Children in all year groups are involved in the HMHB –led ‘Personal Challenge’ lunch time activities, where they can compete against themselves to improve their best. Intra competitions are provided through P.E. lessons, along with Sports Day and other initiatives such as Sport Relief and National Sports Week. The school take part in a high number of inter-school fixtures throughout the year, allowing children of all abilities to compete for the school and experience higher level competition.
Extra-Curricular activities we offer include:
| Mixed football | Athletics | Bowling |
| Girl’s football | Cricket | Netball |
| Judo | Dance | Boxercise |
| Multi-skills | Gymnastics | Boccia |
